Treatment recommendations will always depend on your child’s individual needs.

Community Support

Free Teen Dentistry

We’re proud to support the oral health of young people in our community. Acme Dental offers free dental care for eligible teenagers through New Zealand’s publicly funded adolescent dental programme.

Eligible teens can receive one free dental check-up and clean each year, along with essential dental treatment covered under the programme, from Year 9 until they turn 18.

Getting started is easy — simply contact our team to enrol your teenager for free teen dental care at Acme Dental in Devonport.

Our Approach

Making Dental Visits Comfortable

We understand that visiting the dentist can feel unfamiliar or sometimes intimidating for children. Our approach is to take things at their pace, explain what we’re doing in age-appropriate language and help them become familiar with the dental environment — making every visit feel as positive, comfortable and relaxed as possible.

Prevention for Growing Smiles

Preventive Dental Care for Children

Fissure Sealants

Permanent back teeth can have deep grooves where food and bacteria may become trapped. Sealants provide a protective coating that can help reduce the risk of decay.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride can help strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay. We’ll assess your child’s individual needs and recommend treatment where appropriate.

We’ll also help parents and children understand practical ways to care for their teeth at home, including brushing, flossing and tooth-friendly dietary habits. Establishing these habits early can help support good oral health as children grow.

01

What If My Child Has Toothache?

Children may not always be able to explain exactly where or why something hurts. If your child has toothache, sensitivity, swelling, a broken tooth or discomfort when eating, arrange a dental assessment. For urgent problems, contact us about an emergency appointment.

02

Dental Injuries & ACC

Falls, sports and everyday activities can sometimes result in a chipped, broken or injured tooth. If your child suffers a dental injury as a result of an accident, part of their treatment may be eligible for support through ACC. We can assess the injury and guide you through the next steps.

Surcharge applies.

Common Questions

We’ve got answers.

Yes — under New Zealand’s government-funded adolescent dental scheme, dental care is free from your teenager’s 13th birthday until the day before they turn 18 (broadly Year 9 through Year 13). Contact us to find out about enrolling your teenager for free teen dental care at Acme Dental.

Yes, professional fluoride treatment is safe and an effective way to strengthen children’s developing tooth enamel against decay, and we tailor the approach to your child’s age.

Contact us as soon as possible — we prioritise same-day appointments for children in pain. In the meantime, avoid giving very hot, cold, or sugary food and drinks near the sore tooth.

We use age-appropriate language, a gentle pace, and a judgement-free approach to help children build positive associations with dental visits from an early age — you’re welcome to stay with them throughout.

Yes — sealants are one of the most effective preventive treatments for children, protecting the deep grooves in back teeth where decay commonly starts, right as those teeth come through.

If your child’s dental injury was accident-related — for example, a fall or sports injury — they may be eligible for ACC support. Surcharge applies. We can assess this and help with the claims process.
